Turkish Contingent Commission, 5 March 1856, to Charles Howarth
commission, form

Description

Turkish Contingent Commission, 5 Mar 1856, to Charles Howarth, to 'have the local rank of Lieutenant in our Army in Turkey while serving with the Osmanli Horse Artillery attached to the Turkish Contingent from 8 Feb 1856'. Print and Manuscript. Although Charles Howarth, Gentleman, was granted a commission as a lieutenant in the Osmanli Horse Artillery (part of the British-paid Turkish contingent) on 5 Mar 1856, his name does not appear in the monthly Army List as one of its officers, and with the imminence of peace one suspects that Howarth never had the opportunity of taking up his post.
