Description

Boer War Tribute Medal, 1901. Named to Lt E C Wright, 61st Coy (2nd Dublin) Irish Imperial Yeomanry. Issued by Dublin City, Ireland, 1901. Made by W Clare, Dublin, 1901. Fixed ring suspender (slightly bent) through which passes a loose ring. Obverse, pierced and engraved: a shamrock inscribed FOR VALOUR and surrounded by a circlet bearing the regimental title and date, surmounted by an imperial crown. Reverse, pierced and engraved: the recipient’s name engraved upon a shamrock surrounded by the remaining inscription upon a circlet surmounted by an Imperial crown. At the base a 9 carat gold mark. Gold circlet surmounted by a crown. Six officers and 57 men received this medal. However Lt Wright’s name does not appear on the list given by the Irish Times 19 June 1901. No E C Wright can be found in the Army Lists 1900-1901, serving in the Irish Imperial Yeomanry. However there is a Lt E C Wright listed in Orpen’s Horse (Colonial Contingent in South Africa). Possibly this officer transferred from the Imperial Yeomanry and was the recipient of the medal although did not return to Ireland to receive it.
