NAM.1963-10-131-1
Officer’s Levée sword, similar to General Officer’s pattern 1831. Shamshir blade, has been re-edged and re-polished, with three drill holes would originally have been inlayed; Mameluke hilt, with floral headed rivets and a wreath in the centre of the cross guard; ivory grip with ‘COLONEL WEBB’S AFGHAN SWORD’, inscribed on it; gilt knot with crimson worm; the lack of crossed baton and sword prevent it being Pattern 1831, and it may have been meant for levées; metal label states the blade to be ‘Pure Damascan Steel’; Royal United Service Institute list states this was taken in the Afghan War 1841-42, and then converted to the pattern of a general officer’s sword. Associated with 1st Afghan War (1838-1842).
