Manuscript and microfilmed copies of letters written by Henry Walter Russell de Coetlogon whilst serving on Hicks Pasha’s staff during his expedition into the interior of the Sudan, 1883-1884.

De Coetlogon was one of only two Europeans to survive the campaign against the Mahdi which ended disastrously at the Battle of Kashgil, 4 November 1883.
The letters give a very full account of his activities during the preparations for, and the actual expedition.
