NAM.1967-11-1-1-1
Bound MS letterbook, containing 10 out-letters written by Maj Gen Greathed, Bengal Engineers, possibly to an unidentified army colleague, describing the 2nd Sikh War (1848-1849), 10 August to 30 November 1848. From the papers of Maj Gen William Wilberforce Harris Greathed, 1848-1868. The bulk of the correspondence gives details of engagements and casualties suffered, including the Siege of Multan (1848-1849). An officer, Edwardes (Collector of Revenue) is constantly mentioned, criticised for his engagements e.g. Moolraj, but deserving of Government honours awarded for his preventing Moolraj's troops from uniting with Chuttar Singh and thus ensuring a rebellion throughout the country. Administrative matters include a graphic account of being transported down river, a description of amphibious villages and villagers, and constant criticism of Army administration, particularly orders and counter orders; the delay in sending reinforcements and the imbalance in the ratio of guns available to the number of men able to man them.
