Typescript transcript of diary of Lt The Hon E D Loch, covering his voyage to Egypt, and service in the Sudan to the Battle of Omdurman. He sailed from Gibraltar on the 'Nubia' and reached Alexandria on 15 Jul. From there he proceded to Cairo the same day with an advance party to prepare for the arrival of the rest of the battalion. He met them at Alexandria on 27 Jul, and they set off up the Nile from Cairo on 30 Jul. They reached Atbara on 6 Aug and camped, engaging in training while the rest of the force joined them. On 18 Aug they set off on a steamer, camping at Wadi Habishi on the 22nd. They moved off on 25 Aug, and Loch was appointed Brigade Signalling Officer. As such he was able on 1 Sep to see from a hill used as a signal post the Dervish force advancing across the plain near Omdurman. He saw the battle from the same hill, and the text ends inconclusively. Associated with Battle of Omdurman, 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899).
