Description
The burnt down and pillaged Chinese town on the border of the French settlement at Teintsin, 1900. Pen and ink over watercolour en grisaille by Johann Nepomuk Schonberg. Figures running into the ruined town with handcarts, watched by two French soldiers, during the 3rd China War (Boxer Rebellion) (1900-1901). Signed and dated lower right ‘Schonberg August 1900’.
