gorget, gorget
Accession Number
NAM.1970-12-35-1-1
Description
Gorget, Balteagh Volunteers, white metal, 1785 (c). At centre front a female harp flanked by trophies of weapons, colours, cannon and drums above a decorated scroll bearing the motto, 'Pro Patria'. Above, two further scrolls with an inverted shamrock between and with decorated ends, bearing the title, 'Balteagh Volunteers'. Reverse bears three crude stamps, probably those of the manufacturer, in the form of a rectangle enclosing the letters, 'IF', or 'IE'. These are not unlike the marks of James England and James Fray (curator's notes). The outer edge is split at the apex of the curve, the split running through the vertical stroke of the letter 'P' in the motto.
