Letter, 14 Aug 1900. Sent by Lt Col Sam Hughes, Canadian Militia to Col John Hanbury-Williams, Military Secretary, from RMS ‘Gascon’ in the Bay of Biscay. In the letter Hughes defends his actions in negotiating the surrender of part of De Villiers’ Commando near Kuruman on 23 June and complains of the tepid comments made by General Sir Charles Warren, since reported in the press, Warren had sent Hughes, who had been his assistant Adjutant General and chief intelligence officer, back to the Cape for disobeying orders, as Hughes had failed to secure the complete surrender Warren had stipulated. Hughes also alludes to the action at Faber’s Put on 30 May, for which he claims he should have been awarded the Victoria Cross.
