Whyte is recorded as having attended the wounded Lt L E G Oates, who later died as a member of Scott’s Antarctic Expedition; Bernacchi relates how Oates, serving with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, was wounded on patrol near Aberdeen, South Africa; Whyte and a volunteer search party located Oates, his fractured leg was set without the aid of an anaesthetic, and he was evacuated to Aberdeen.
