The Sing Song.
British troops around a camp fire, Boer War, Christmas 1900.
Watercolour en grisaille by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), signed and dated at lower left, ‘W B Wollen/ 1900’.
Possibly an original sketch for ‘The Cornhill Magazine’, 1900.
Toops seated as one of their members stands on a makeshift ‘stage’ in front of the fire, presumably to lead the singing.
Inscribed at top as title; laid down on board, with label verso inscribed in pen and ink.
