Sword, 1891. Made by Wilkinson on a commercial contract for the Queensland Government in 1891. Non-standard short blade similar to Staff Sergeant’s sword Pattern 1889, marked to the Queensland Government with pommel and backstrap of Staff Sergeant’s sword Engineers Pattern. As it was made by contract the sword was probably made up from parts in stock at Wilkinson. Issued in Aug 1891, probably to the Queensland Militia of Mounted Infantry and used by the Queensland Mounted Infantry during the Boer War, 1899-1902. The Queensland Mounted Infantry were the first Australian contingent involved in an action in the Boer War, at Sunnyside in 1900.
