Description

Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902 in bronze, awarded to Syce (groom) Innoyetullah, 4th Lancers, Hyderbad Contingent. Obverse: Queen Victoria, facing left. Reverse: Britannia holding Union flag and laurel wreath with marching soldiers and warships. Although the 4th Lancers was not deployed to South Africa, two of its officers served there. Lieutenant P F Newnham was killed at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900 with Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, while Captain A E Barnard survived the campaign of 1901. A small number of bronze medals were awarded to Indian bearers and servants and it may be presumed that Syce Innoyetullah was in South Africa with either Newnham or Barnard.
