For the expedition to the Aland Islands in the Gulf of Finland, the French provided 9000 troops and the British supplied transportation. The French embarked at Calais and Sous-Officier Francois Lambelet of the 48th Regiment found himself aboard the HMS Royal William, a sailing 120 gun three decker. He writes to his parents that the sixteen day voyage to the Aland Islands had been pleasant, aside from two stormy days, and that his English hosts had been most friendly.
