Reception of Her Majesty’s XXXIXth Regiment of Foot, on their arrival in Montreal from the Crimea …on passing under the Triumphal Arch at the Place d’Armes and Bank of Montreal’, 28 June 1856. Silk printed with a wood engraving by J Walker after J Duncan, published by Salter and Ross, 1856 (c). Associated with the Crimean War (1854-1856). Britain’s abortive attempt to recruit an American Legion - to join its Swiss, German and Italian legions - strained relations with the United States and, to help defend Canada in the event of war, five regiments under Maj Gen Sir William Eyre were shipped there directly from the Crimea. Among them was the 39th (The Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot which left the Crimea on 1 May 1856 aboard the 'Simoon' and, as this commemorative broadsheet shows, received an enthusiastic reception upon its arrival at Montreal.
