Description

Other rank’s knapsack, 1850 (c). Made of canvas painted black and reinforced with black leather on a wooden frame, with buff leather straps; a flap opening is on the inside against the wearer’s back; at the bottom of one side is a paper label printed printed ‘37’, contemporary (?). Two narrow straps at the top were used to fasten items, such as a greatcoat, to the knapsack, there are usually three such straps; painted on the exterior face with number ‘4’ and a grenade with a broad plume of flames. Grenadier Guards knapsacks of 1854 (c) bore the Royal Cypher badge, therefore this knapsack was probably used by a Fusilier Regiment or a Grenadier company of a line regiment; the details of construction of knapsacks carried during the Crimean War (1854-1856) do vary.
