NAM.1983-11-9-1
Two manuscript volumes containing copies of letters written to members of his family by Capt Edward Seager, 8th Hussars, 5 Jun 1854- 15 Aug 1855, describing his service in the Crimean War (1854-1856). The volumes describe the voyage from Malta to Varna, the opposed landing in the Crimea, and later his command of the Cavalry Depot at Scutari from February 1855, and appointment as Assistant Military Secretary to Lord William Paulet the following July. Apart from his description of the charge of the Light Brigade, and letters referring to gifts of clothing by the people of Bootle to the 8th Hussars, the letters cover the same themes as others written by officers during the campaign. The contents of the volumes are almost identical, with the first containing seven fewer letters than the second.
