NAM.1986-02-22-1
Photocopy of an offprint about British Imperialism and popular military art between 1880 and 1914. Written by John Springhall, 1985. The paper suggests that the popular military art of the period needs to be seen in the context of a heroic and romantic vision of empire, which helped to widen the appeal of British imperialism. Special correspondents and war artists had an important role to play in popularising the army. In the study, the ways in which the Egyptian War, and 1st and 2nd Sudan Wars were interpreted by four artists- Butler, Prior, Villiers, and Woodville- are considered, including the way that their sketches were altered by editors of illustrated magazines at home. An appendix lists the works of Lady Butler, which were sold as engravings. Associated with the Egyptian War (1882), the 1st Sudan War (1884-1885), and the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899).
