Description

Manuscript diary of Capt Graeme Auchmuty Fulton, 2nd Madras European Light Infantry. The entries record his attendance at lectures on the new Enfield Rifle, social visits, the weather, and his attendance at parades- particularly on the first of each month when he also collected his pay. Further on the events in India come to dominate the diary, and he copied long extracts from the newspapers into his book. He also collected stories from officers arriving in India. On 2 July he went on a voyage and picnic up the Irrawaddy, and enjoined playing billiards, chess, and other games during his visits to the various messes in Rangoon. On 19 July (when the entries close) he embarked on the ‘Coromandel’ with a detachment of troops for service elsewhere. Associated with Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
