Victoria Cross, 1857. From a medal group awarded to Pte (later Sgt) John Ryan, 1st Madras European Fusiliers, for his actions at Lucknow on 25-26th September 1857. No ribbon. Associated with Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). On 26th Spetember 1857 Pte Ryan along with Pte McManus, rescued a party from being massacred as they were shut up in a house in the city of Lucknow, by the rebel sepoys
