NAM.1984-06-50-1
Officer’s Sword, Grenadier Company, 84th Foot; blade is curved blade and spear pointed, with blued and engraved decoration, including the maker’s name, Dawes, and the owner’s name, the pre-1801 Royal Arms, Britannia and the cypher, GR; gilt brass knucklebow guard with additional curved bars and a lion’s head pommel; gilt and crimson sword knot; Pattern 1796 was intended for use by all infantry officers, but those in flanking companies, such as the Grenadiers, were carrying sabres, such as this, because their curved blades were often more practical then the longer straight design; official recognition was given to this in 1799; carried by Capt Philip Entwistle, who was commissioned into the regiment in June 1809 and retired on half pay in February 1818.
