sabretache, sabretache
Accession Number

NAM.1960-09-42-1

Description

Sabretache, officers’, 4th (Queen’s Own) Dragoons, possibly worn by Maj Gen N Norcliffe, 1815 (c). Blue Morocco leather. The tight-fitting uniform of the cavalry didn’t allow for pockets. Documents and other small items were carried in the sabretache. The German for pocket or pouch was tasche, thus the ‘sabretache’ was the pocket attached to the sword or the sabre. This example is thought to have been worn by the future Major-General Norcliffe who served as a lieutenant and captain in the 4th Dragoons 1808-1821.
