sword, dragoon, pattern 1796, sword, dragoon
Accession Number
NAM.1978-11-144-1
Description
Sword, Pattern 1796, Light Cavalry Officer’s, 10th (Prince of Wales) Light Dragoons, 1810 (c) Blade is curved with a flat back, fuller, and spear point; gilt brass stirrup guard with silver Prince of Wales’ feathers pinned to the langets; wooden grip covered with fish skin and bound with brass or copper wire; it is probable that this sword was only for Full Dress as it has a poor quality imported blade, although Pattern 1796 swords, with their stirrup-hilts, proved an encumbrance when dismounting and were being replaced by mameluke hilts for Full or Evening Dress from 1801; the pommel and backpiece are the same as those of Pattern 1822; designed and made by Prosser (?).
