Description

Military General Service Medal 1793-1814, with 12 clasps: Toulouse, Orthes, Nive, Nivelle, Pyrenees, Vittoria, Salamanca, Badajoz, Ciudad Rodrigo, Fuentes D’Onor, Busaco and Corunna. One of two medals awarded to Surgeon William Jones. Associated with the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Surgeon Jones served as Regimental Surgeon to the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment in the Peninsular and at Waterloo. The surgeons in Wellington’s Army were barely able to cope with the thousands of casualties after Waterloo. Additional medical officers and civilian volunteers were sent from England to help, even then they were hopelessly overstretched.
