Description

Grenadier cap, South Bn, Hampshire Militia, worn by Lt J B Harrison, 1760 (c). Metal and silk thread embroidery on black velvet. Militia regiments did not have to follow the regulations laid down for regular troops, the cap front, however, was not always the same as the uniform facing colour and the white horse of Hanover was often used. The Latin motto on this cap translates as ‘The sickles are forged into blades’. This no doubt reflected the fact that most militia recruits were agricultural workers.
