Booklet: Souvenir of the Shanghai Defence Forces. Issued, 1928 (c). Documents the services of the Shanghai Defence Force, a 20000 strong military expedition sent to China in 1927 commanded by Maj Gen Sir John Duncan. This came about when the British government judged that British economic interests and communities in China, especially in Shanghai, were under threat from Chinese warlords, but even more so from the forces, mistakenly believed to be Bolshevik, led by Chiang Kai- shek. The force saw little action when it arrived. Once Chang Kai-Shek had turned on his erstwhile communist allies in April 1927 the threat to British interests was lifted and the force was stood down by the end of the year. Includes a list of British and Indian units that made up the force and several reproduced photographs of British, Indian and Allied soldiers originallly published in the ‘North China Daily News’. Associated with the Shanghai Expedition (1927).
