Description
Letter, Colombo, 9 Sept 1797. Sent by Philip Rosenhagen, military chaplain, to Col Aston. Rosenhagen complains that he has been superseded as chaplain of the 80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) because Lt Col Josiah Champagne, Capt Mark William Carr and Lt John Dalrymple wished to deprive him of his ‘batta’ or allowances. Rosenhagen also comments on the military situation, saying that reinforcements will be needed to subdue the natives. Col Aston is, presumably Henry Harvey Aston, 12th (The East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot. Associated with the wars of the French Revolution, East Indies.
