Description

Diary of John Michael Gregson (Michael) Halsted, C Sqn, Queen’s Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards), 1941-1942. Halsted sailed from England to Alexandria via Cape Town. After spending some time in a rest camp and some squadron manoeuvres they crossed into Libya on 20 December. By 30th they were south of Sidi Rezegh, advancing early January. On 23rd January they were in action near Saunnu, moving on to Cherruba on the 25th. On 28th January he was transferred to a composite Regiment, which on 7 Feb raided a German advanced position between Tmimi and Gazala. On 24th February he was appointed to command a Tank Delivery Troop, which he did until 27 March when he rejoined his original unit. From 1-12 April he was on leave in Cairo, and engaged in a big scheme before going into battle on 27 May, when he was wounded. The text was completed in hospital in Oxford and gives a good account of the engagement and his subsequent recovery. Associated with World War Two, North Africa (1940-1943).
