Description

Sweetheart brooch, 1915. Relating to 259324 Lt David Edward Westwater, 21 Field Sqn Royal Engineers, 1939-1943. Made of silver, hallmarked Birmingham, 1915. Brooch depicts the regimental badge of the Royal Engineers with the royal cypher for King George V in the centre. Lt Westwater enlisted in 1939, was commissioned in 1942 and was killed in action, 16 Mar 1943 near Bir Reir, south of Mareth, Tunisia, aged 26. The brooch pre-dates Lt Westwater’s joining the Royal Engineers and was presumably bought by or for his sister Margaret in recognition of her brother’s service with the regiment.
