Murphy attended Charterhouse School in 1914 and later travelled to India, where he attended Wellington Cadet College, Nilgiris, in 1915.
During 1916-1917, Murphy served in the Indian Army, with the 52nd Sikhs Frontier Force and 9th Hodson’s Horse and was posted to India, France and Egypt, 1916-1920.
Murphy eventually attained the rank of Major and retired from the Indian Army, 1924-1925.
