Description
Collection of letters written by Lt Col William Windham, West Norfolk Militia, Gloucester, January to April 1760, where the battalion was stationed on permanent duty. The recipient of the letters is not known, although he was probably related (or married) to a Lady Ferrers. The contents of the letters cover two main themes: the condition, training, clothing, promotions and other military matters affecting the battalion, and the politics of the Norfolk Militia. The addressee had at first been appointed Colonel of the battalion, but was then supplanted by Lord Lt Townshend. Lt Col Windham took a dim view of this manouevre, and also disliked Col Lord Orford who had also held a senior command in the County Militia.
