Circular letter, 30 Sept 1796. Sent by the Secretary at War William Windham, to Regimental Chaplains, ordering them to either join their regiments by 25 Dec, or to retire to a reduced subsistence rate. It had been decided to gradually abolish the office of regimental chaplain, and to make alternative arrangements for the spiritual welfare of the troops.
