Soldier's letter, 22 Apr 1799. Sent from Pte James Brunton, 1st Northern Militia, stationed at Colchester, to his friend William Paterson, a gardener at Selkirk. The letter was allowed to be carried at the privileged rate of 1d pre-paid and was countersigned by Brunton's commanding officer, Capt J Shafto. Paterson's unit had been stationed at Colchester for the preceding six months.
