Description

Incomplete narrative of the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot (Ross-shire Buffs) services written in a book with a paper watermark of 1818. Roughly half of the text has been lost, and the extant pages are numbered 63-72, 77-100, with Appendices 1-16, copies of various documents of 7 Mar 1793- 13 Mar 1816. The remaining narrative commences on 17 Sep 1811 and describes the later stages of the capture of Java. It ends on 24 May 1823 with the regiment at Kilkenny. The appendices include copies of the warrant for the raising of the regiment, a list of the original officers, various lists of casualties, orders, and dispatches. The volume ends with an account of the wreck of the ‘Francis Charlotte’, with notes by Dr Currie the regimental surgeon. The text is presumed to have been written by an Angus Robertson, supposedly an officer in the regiment, although noone has been found in the Army Lists with that name. Inscribed on inside front cover: ‘Angus Robertson’s Services with HM 78th Regimentd, of the Rosshire Buffs.’
