Coatee, officers’, full dress, worn by Sgn Christopher Bakewell Bassano, 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot, 1844-1855 (c) Associated with the Crimean War (1854-1856). Christopher Bakewell Bassano (1824-1856) joined the 70th (The Surrey) Regiment of Foot as an assistant surgeon on 22 Dec 1848. He was appointed a staff surgeon, 2nd class on 10 Aug 1855 whereupon he travelled to the Crimea. He died at Balaklava on 1 Feb 1856. His coatee, with company officer’s epaulettes, is of the standard pattern worn by the officers of infantry regiments; the distinguishing colour of the cuffs and the device on the buttons would have marked Bassano out as belonging to the Surreys.
