Description
Second Lieutenant George Crawford (?-1813), Royal Artillery, 1804 (c) Oil on canvas by Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823), 1804 (c) half length in a dark blue coat with red facings, gold lace and an epaulette on the right shoulder Crawford was appointed 2nd lieutenant of Invalids on 2 February 1804. He died at Woolwich on 11 September 1813. Crawford wears the Royal Artillery officers’ uniform coat of 1796-1816, although the shirt ruffles were officially abolished in 1799. The single epaulette on the right shoulder was also rarely worn after 1800, although this is contradicted by the dates of his first commission.
