Description

Regimental Colour, Leeds Volunteers (West Riding Yorkshire), 1795-1802. Painted silk; presented to the regiment by Lt Col Thomas Lloyd. The Leeds Volunteers were formed in 1794 and Thomas Lloyd was elected to command the regiment, which he commanded for 13 years. The regiment was briefly disbanded in 1802 when the peace of Amiens was signed, but then re-raised in 1803. Lloyd retired from the Leeds Volunteers in 1807 and the regiment was disbanded in 1808 on the formation of the Local Militia. The colour bears the arms of Leeds which include a fleece, a reference to the prosperity from the wool trade and two owls, symbols of wisdom, as supporters.
