Description

Distinguished Service Order, George V issue. From medal group awarded to Lt Col W H Trevor, 1st (later 2nd) Bn, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), Commanding Officer 27 Apr 1919 to 26 Apr 1923. This medal is suspended by a red ribbon with a blue border with a swivel bar suspender. There is a second bar in the middle of the ribbon, decorated with laurel leaves. The obverse depicts a cross with curved edges coated with white enamel. In the centre of the object there is an imperial crown on a red background and enclosed within a green wreath. The reverse is similar in design with the royal cypher of King George V in the centre, on a red background within a green wreath. This order would be awarded to those who displayed leadership and successful command in times of war specifically during combat. It was awarded to soldiers with the rank of Major or above, or was given to lower ranking soldiers who performed an act of gallantry, where a Victoria Cross would not be appropriate. From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.
