Photocopies of five manuscript and typescript letters of April 1898 regarding the raising of "a force of native troops from the Mendi tribe, and possibly, later, the Timine, to be called the West African Regiment". The correspondence is between the War Office, Treasury and Col Edward Robert Prevost Woodgate, who was to raise the unit to aid in the supression of the revolt caused by the collection of a hut tax.
