NAM.1953-02-22-1

38th Prince of Wales's Own Central India Horse, Lance Dafadar Gakkar (Punjabi Musalman), 1908 (c). Watercolour, signed lower left by Major Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1908 (c). The original for the illustration opposite p64 of Major G F MacMunn’s 'Armies of India', published in 1911. The classes (racial groups) usually recruited into the Central India Horse were Sikhs (two squadrons), Pathans (one squadron) and 'Musalman' (Muslim) Rajputs (one squadron), so the presence of Gakhar is unusual. In July 1908 the regiment was stationed at Agar.
