Accession Number

Description
Trooper’s sword, Horse Grenadier Guards (2nd Troop), 1780 (c); blade is straight, flat backed, single edged with a single fuller each side and spear pointed; guard is a steel half basket, marked with the regiment’s monogram; wooden grip covered in fish skin and bound with copper wire; the Household Cavalry regiments were not required to correspond to cavalry patterns authorised for other regiments, as a result of this the documentation and dating of specimens before 1850 is difficult; this sword may be the pattern referred to in the 1780 accounts of Cox [and] Co, the regimental agents, where new sword hilts for the 2nd Troop are recorded as costing £37 5s 2d.
