Description

Officer's shako plate, 32nd (Cornwall) Light Infantry, gilt, 1858-1861. Gilt frosted metal backplate: eight-pointed rayed star with top point displaced by a Victorian crown. Mounted in centre of star, a round gilt Garter. Within Garter on a disc of black patent leather or similar is a finely formed bright gilt metal strung horn with bell to dexter side. Horn has knurled band at ends and centre and a foliate band where strings meet suspension 'rings'. From bow knot protrude to each side downwards small thistle-shaped tassels. The whole device fills the space within the Garter. Between the horn and strings is, '32', in Arabic.
