shoulder belt plate, shoulder belt plate
Accession Number
NAM.1982-11-72-1
Description
Officers’ shoulder belt plate, 8th (Angus and Kincardine) North British Militia, 1802-1814. Mounted on a burnished copper gilt ground within an applied beaded border, a white metal design of a thistle surmounted by a monarchial crown and flanked by the embellished royal cypher ‘G R’. During the period this plate was worn, the titles Angus and Forfar were interchangeable for that county in Scotland. However, at no time does the title Angus appear in the Army Lists for any Militia regiment. The Forfar and Kincardine Militia (known as the Forfarshire Militia prior to 1802) was ranked 8th in the order of precedence of Scottish Militia regiments.
