Statuette of The Buddha sitting cross-legged under the peepul tree, 1912 (c). Silver, possibly made in Burma (see rounded form script across front of bases) even if acquired in Tibet, 1912 (c). Associated with 28th King George's Own Lancers, 1912 (c). Silver-covered earthenware; figure seated cross-legged upon a round backed stool, with stylised tree having individual ‘leaves’ hanging down. Two bands of incised decoration and one with inscription going around the stool. Figure’s left hand is folded on top of lap; right hand resting on left shin. Around the head is a hat surmounted by a spike. Behind the figure, rising from two brackets on the stool, is a silver tube to top of the spike in which is a tree (wire twisted together to make the stem, with strands as branches from which are free-hanging, triangular silver leaves); stem has a 4-sided foil leaf at top. Two sockets on either side of head show where ears are missing (originally very long and applied separately as foil.).
