sword, cavalry, pattern 1796, sword, cavalry
Accession Number
NAM.1980-05-19-1
Description
Sword, Pattern 1796, Light Cavalry Officer, 1810 (c) Made by Osborn and Gunby on contract to the Board of Ordnance; Fine blue and gilt blade, decorated with Brittania/Victory, royal coat of arms and trophy of arms; steel stirrup-hilt. This weapon follows the principle of uniformity between Officer’s and Trooper’s sword, officer’s swords being better quality and elaborately decorated; Pattern 1796 swords, with their stirrup-hilts, proved an encumbrance when dismounting and were being replaced by mameluke hilts for Full or Evening Dress from 1801.
