Description

Cavalry Officer’s sword, 1777-1780; straight, flat backed fullered blade, engraved with the maker’s name, G Harvey, and a Georgian cypher; guard is similar to the three bar type, but has been modified by having the two inner bars of the hilt removed, this may have made the sword more comfortable in the hand whilst retaining the outer bars for protection; grip covered in fish skin and bound with twisted copper wire; this is possibly an officer’s version of the Horse Grenadier Guards Trooper’s sword. Hilt similar to Pattern 1788 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s sword, but blade is much lighter and so are the bars on the hilt.
