Description

Second or third regimental guidon, 1800-1802. From a collection of items associated with 24th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1800-1802. Double sided, painted silk guidon; the ground is ochre in colour with painted central motif surrounded by four smaller cartouches; two depict a leaping horse; two depict pink roses. There is a pole sleeve on left. Black and red fringe running the perimeter of the flag. Dimensions: 20 1/2 inch (52 cms) x 34 3/8 inch (cms) excluding 1 1/2 inch wide fine twisted silk and fine twisted gold wire fringe. Guidon of yellow silk with yellow silk sleeve. On obverse and reverse a similar painted design. In upper hoist and lower fly quarters a cartouche edged with gold scrolls. Within the scrolls a white horse courant upon green grass all upon a red ground. In the upper fly and lower hoist corners a cartouche edged with gold scrolls, within which is a spray of union flowers proper upon a red ground. In the centre the following design: within a wreath of union flowers proper the gold Roman numeral ‘XXIV’ below which are the gold letters ‘LD’ all upon a red ground. 1800-1802. The regiment was raised in 1794 and disbanded in 1802. As the guidons bear the shamrock which indicates a date after the Union with Ireland in 1800, the shamrocks may have been added and it is possible that the guidons were presented to the regiment as early as 1794.
