Spadroon; straight blade, with engraved decoration, including the Royal coat of Arms, trophies, the maker’s name Knubley, and the cypher, F Y G; silver, moving bar guard or attack-guard, with Assay marks for 1792 and marks of the silversmith Moses Brent; the silver ‘attack’ guard is a device intended for use when in action only; the cypher on the blade could represent the First Yorkshire Grenadier Regiment, but it is more likely that the F is a J and therefore the owner’s initials
