Description
Tunic, officers’, full dress, South Devon Militia, 1868. Pattern 1856-1868. Scarlet wool cloth with white facings and silver buttons, with crown rank badge. Militia Regiments were first embodied in Devon in 1759. By 1763 these had settled into the 1st or East Devon, 2nd or North Devon and 3rd or South Devon. After 1853 the South Devon became the 2nd, as the old 2nd were converted into an artillery militia unit on the outbreak of the Crimean War. The single crown and pip badge and single row of lace indicates this was worn by a Captain.
