Description

Commission to Hubert Joseph Lancaster signed by his Excellency the Right Honourable Viscount Buxton, Commander-in-Chief over the Union of South Africa, dated 15 Sep 1916. Commission appoints Hubert Lancaster as a Temporary Lieutenant and Quartermaster in the Active Citizen Force. After the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, Gen Jan Smuts, the Union’s first Minister of Defence, placed a high priority on creating a unified military out of the separate armies of the Union’s four provinces; the Defence Act of 1912 established the Active Citizen Force consisting of temporary conscripts and volunteers.
